In March of this year, Chipotle teamed up with Blue Rocket, a leading custom mobile app development firm, to develop the Chipotle iPhone Ordering app, the first major release of the Chipotle app since 2010.
The Challenge
Walk-in Chipotle customers often find long lines at peak times like lunchtime, sometimes out the door. Chipotle realized they could use their extra kitchen capacity to fill advanced orders via a mobile app thereby allowing customers to skip-the-line during busy times.
The Solution
Chipotle’s mobile iPhone app was designed to give hungry customers the ability to order their meal in advance and designate a pick-up time to ensure fresh food quality. In stores, Chipotle uses a walk-up counter to deliver mobile orders allowing customers to skip the line. Also, providing an innovative mobile app for regular Chipotle burrito lovers would enhance Chipotle’s brand in the mobile channel.
Chipotle selected Blue Rocket as their iOS development partner tasked to work closely with Chipotle’s IT team and with Chipotle’s branding and digital agency. They have since expanded to offer an Android-based app.
Blue Rocket worked with Chipotle to make mobile ordering easy and repeatable with an:
• Easy to navigate menu
• Favorite orders saved for next time
• Detailed order summary with price totals and pick-up time
• Secure payment from stored credit cards
• Store finder
Chipotle iPhone Ordering app allows customers to configure an order, pay for the order directly on their iPhone, select a store and available pick-up time, and then skip-the-line to grab their pre-ordered meal. The latest release of the Chipotle iPhone Ordering adds features like presenting menu items only available at a specific locations, taking payments with gift cards and looking up gift card balances, nutritional and allergen information, and enabling selection of special menu options like brown rice. Customers also receive improved navigation, Spanish and French language support and mobile ordering for Canada, UK and Paris locations as well.
The Chipotle iPhone app quickly rose to the top 20 on Apple’s App Store in downloads and became the highest-rated application amongst the top 50 apps. Millions of downloads later, customers still order the “usual” with just a few taps of a finger and pick up their food without waiting in line at any of Chipotle’s 1400+ nationwide and international locations. Many in the fast-casual restaurant industry consider the Chipotle iPhone Ordering app the gold standard for a “line-busting” mobile ordering experience. According to Appannie.com, the public agrees that Chipotle’s iPhone Ordering app as the top fast-casual restaurant app within the entire food and drink app category.
